Abstract

In the 2000s, the issue of traffic safety has been addressed with a system approach. In this approach, traffic culture is a very important concept. The manners in traffic which is a reflection of the traffic culture, is defined as the behavior patterns of the people in a community or country in the traffic environment against individual and each other. This research is based on two main objectives. The first aim is to examine the thoughts and feelings of the road users living in Ankara about the concepts related to traffic law and the manners in traffic, in other words, social representation / scheme of the manners in traffic. The second aim of the study is to evaluate the changes in thoughts and feelings after receiving “awareness training” on the subject before taking any information about the manners in traffic and related concepts. When the findings are evaluated, positive changes have been determined in the individuals who have received awareness education prepared by the researchers in accordance with the relevant curriculum of the Ministry of National Education. The main dimensions of change in expected direction are the manners in traffic, responsibility, tolerance, altruism, patience, empathy, individual right, and the effect of others on driving behavior. After the awareness training, an increase in the positive statements reported in relation to the concepts of tolerance, empathy and individual right have been identified.
