Publication Policy and Manuscript Writing Rules


Ethics Committee Permission is required since January 2022 and articles that do not receive Ethics Committee Permission will not be accepted. In studies that require ethics committee permission, information about the permission (name of the committee, date and number) should be added at the end of the article as follows “Ethics committee approval of this article was taken from ............. (name of the committee), with ....... (date), ......... (number).” In case reports, information about the informed voluntary consent/consent form being signed should be included within the method section of the article. In Journal of Social Sciences, original studies, translations, research notes, book and thesis evaluations, edition critiques, and studies like that within the scope of Social Sciences are published. Manuscripts to be sent to the Journal of Social Sciences is required to be original manuscripts that fills a gap in the field or a review that evaluates previously published studies and presents new and remarkable views on this subject.

All scientific and legal responsibilities of the manuscripts published in the journal belong to the authors. The subjects that the manuscripts center on both in terms of content and ideas are related to the academic attitude and opinion of the author, and it cannot be associated with the publication policies of the journal. Journal of Social Sciences does not accept any liability.

If the article is derived from the thesis or the symposium paper, this should be indicated by giving footnote to the article title. i.e., This study is derived from the master’s / doctoral thesis titled ………… which was approved by the Institute of ……….. on ………...

Manuscripts to be published in the Journal of Social Sciences must not have been previously published or must not be in the evaluation process of other publication. Papers that were previously presented at a scientific meeting can be accepted, provided this is clearly stated.

A maximum of one work by the same author can be published in any issue.

Manuscripts sent to the journal are first reviewed by the Editorial Board in terms of compliance with journal principles. Manuscripts that do not comply with the Publication Principles of the Journal of Social Sciences will not be evaluated.

 

Publication Period

Journal of Social Sciences is an international-indexed peer-reviewed journal published biannually (30 June - 31 December), except special and additional issues.

Publication Language

The publication language of the Journal of Social Sciences is Turkish. However, manuscripts in English and Arabic can be included in the Journal of Social Sciences, not exceeding one third of each issue. Manuscripts sent in other languages can also be published with the approval of the Editorial Board. In Arabic articles, a reference list in Roman script should also be included. 

Citation and Reference System

Journal of Social Sciences requires APA 7 to be used in citation and bibliography.

Plagiarism Policy

It is confirmed that the manuscripts submitted for publication have not been published before and do not contain plagiarism through a special program used for plagiarism detection.

Authors submitting articles to the Journal of Social Sciences are deemed to have declared that they have not committed any ethical violation. The works of authors who are found to have plagiarized are not included in our Journal, and the report on this subject is sent to the author.

Open Access Policy

Journal of Social Sciences provides instant open access to its content. All the content published in the Journal of Social Sciences is open to the access of not only academic institutions and organizations, but also to anyone with internet access. With the open access policy, it is aimed that the published articles and studies contribute to the development of science and scientific method, and that everyone can access scientific information easily and without paying any fee.

Archiving

Articles and manuscripts sent to the Journal of Social Sciences and information and documents belong to them are kept indefinitely for archiving under the supervision of the journal management.

Copyright

The copyright of the manuscripts accepted to be published in the Journal of Social Sciences is deemed to have been transferred to the Journal Editorship. The articles cannot be published, reproduced, or used in another publication without the permission of the journal management. Journal of Social Sciences may publish the manuscripts in various media.

 

Manuscript Acceptance and Evaluation Process

Journal of Social Sciences accepts submissions through its online journal system. Uploading the manuscript to the journal online system is accepted as an application.

Those who want to submit a manuscript for publication to the Journal of Social Sciences must become a member as an author or author/referee from the “New User” section at www.toplumbilimleri.com. It is important for the authors to pay attention to the name-surname spelling rules, since the name used in the membership will be automatically added by the system during the publication phase (e.g., Emrah YAVUZ). It is important to fill in the requested information completely when signing up for the Journal of Social Sciences as a writer or reviewer. In the field title, the author’s work and interests should be listed. e.g., Theology/Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies/Department of Religious Sciences (Sociology of Religion).

Authors whose membership is approved by the editor should upload their manuscripts to the system from the “Manuscript Submission System” or “Submit New Article” section.  

Articles added to the system of the Journal of Social Sciences should not include the author’s name, surname, title, and institution information, or any reference revealing the identity of the author. Articles should not include headers, footers, and page numbers. In the final version of the manuscripts whose review process have been completed and accepted for publication, information about the authors is added with the cooperation of the authors and the editorial board, based on the “Article Cover Template” sent to the authors at the publication stage.

All processes, from the application to the publication of the article, are carried out electronically.  

In the Journal of Social Sciences, the following processes take place after the manuscript is uploaded to the system by the author:

Control of the uploaded manuscript in terms of publication policy, writing rules, scientific content and form is carried out by the editor/assistant editor. Academic objectivity and scientific quality are the most important criteria in the evaluation of manuscripts. As a result of the evaluation, if there are corrections to be made, the manuscript is returned to the author by requesting correction. Manuscript is sent to the reviewers after the approval of the editor. Manuscripts that do not comply with the writing principles will not be sent to the reviewers.

The reviewers determined for the manuscripts in the evaluation process are selected from among those who have expertise in the field and department directly related to the manuscript. Manuscripts that are uploaded to the system for publication are subject to double-blind peer-review evaluation by at least two reviewers. For this reason, the names of the reviewers are not published, and the reports are kept for 5 years. Authors and reviewers should take care keeping their identities confidential. For this purpose, persons such as authors, editors and reviewers who send files to the system should pay attention to the following points regarding the text and files:

Authors should delete the places where their names and institutions are mentioned in the text (including footnotes and other texts etc.).

When Microsoft documents are saved, personal information is also saved into the file information (such as document name, user information in correction and annotation notes). Therefore, this personal information should be deleted from the document properties.  

The author and the reviewer should follow the reviewing process on their own page. Since the author can add correction to the system once in case of it is requested, should wait for the reports from all reviewers (two field reviewers). The author should make the desired corrections according to the reviewer report sent to her/him and upload it to the system as soon as possible. Reviewers may want to see the manuscript they want to be corrected before it is published. If this request is stated in the report, the corrected version of the manuscript is automatically sent to the reviewer by the system. The maximum period for the reviewers to evaluate the manuscript sent to them is 30 (thirty) days. A new reviewer is appointed for the manuscript that is not reported at the end of this process, and the period is 30 (thirty) days. 

In order for the manuscript to be accepted by the Journal, it must receive positive evaluation from both referees. The 3rd reviewer may also be asked to contribute to the evaluation process, if necessary. The manuscript that receives two positive reviewer reports is entitled to be published. The manuscript, which receives a positive and a negative reviewer report, is sent to a third reviewer (journal field reviewer) and whether the manuscript is published or not is determined in accordance with the report of the third reviewer. Authors may object to the reviewer’s report within a reasonable framework and convincing data. Objections are reviewed by the journal management and, if deemed appropriate, a different reviewer (or reviewers) can be consulted on the subject. Journal editors meticulously follow the corrections given by the reviewers and may decide to publish or not publish a manuscript accordingly. Manuscripts that are not accepted for publication are not returned to their authors.

 

Manuscript Writing Rules

While editing the manuscripts, please take the MANUSCRIPT TEMPLATE as an example.

Manuscripts should meet the following criteria:

1. Page Layout

Sheet Size: A4 Vertical

Top Margin: 3 cm

Bottom Margin: 3 cm

Left Margin: 3 cm

Right Margin: 3 cm

Font: Cambria

Main Title: 12-point

Chapter and Subheadings: 12-point

Main Text: 11-point

Abstract: 10-point

Footnote text: Footnote can be added only in cases that require explanation (9-point).

Paragraph Spacing: Before 0 pt. - After 0 pt.

Indent: 1,25 cm

Line Spacing: Single (1)

 

2. Writing Rules:

a. Title: Main title should be compatible with the content. Titles of the main sections, references and appendices should be written in bold and capital letters. In the study, subheadings can be used to provide an information systematically and the headings can be numbered, if necessary. Only the first letters of the subheadings should be bold and capitalized. Authors should continue from the same line by placing a colon at the end of the subheadings.

b. Abstract: At the beginning of the article, there should be an abstract in Turkish and English consisting at least 150 and maximum 200 words which concisely expresses the problem, purpose, importance, method, and findings/results of the research. Abstracts should be indented 1,5 cm both from the left and the right. Keywords consisting of at least 5 and at most 8 words should be given below the abstract. Keywords should be ordered from general to specific. The first letters of the keywords should have uppercase letters, the other letters should have lowercase letters and they should be separated by commas.

c. Extended Abstract: There should be an extended abstract consisting of at least 300 and at most 500 words and mentioning the purpose, method, findings, and results of the work. Extended abstracts should be prepared in English for Turkish articles; and in Turkish for articles written in English and Arabic. Extended abstract should be added after the conclusion of the article, before reference list. 

d. Main Text: Manuscripts should not exceed 7000 (seven thousand) words and book reviews should not exceed 1000 (thousand) words. The parts that need to be emphasized in the text should be written in italic letters, not bold.

e. Tables and Figures: Tables should have numbers and titles. The number of the table should be written at the top, left-justified and vertical, the title of the table should be written italic with the first letter of each word capitalized. Tables should be in the appropriate places in the text. The number and the title of the figures should be centered just below the figure. The figure number should be written italic, ends with period; and the figure name should be written vertically with just first letter capitalized.

f. Details such as page numbers, headers and footers should not be included in the manuscripts.

g. Turkish Language Association’s spelling guide should be taken as a basis, except the situations that the article or the subject is compulsory in terms of spelling and punctuation.

h. Citing and Reference List: Citations and reference list should be arranged according to the rules stated below. Articles that are not edited according to the specified rules will be returned directly to the authors without being reviewed.

 

General Rules for In-Text Citations:

  • Footnotes should not be used in citing references.
  • Direct quotations contain more than 40 words, should be treated as block quotations. Start a block quotation on a new line and indent the whole block 0.5 in from the left margin. Quotation marks should not be used to enclose a block quotation.
  • When citing the works of the same author within the same year, such a way is followed; (Karataş, 2001a, Karataş, 2001b).
  • When citing multiple sources, author names should be given in alphabetical order. e.g. (Anar, 2019, p. 15; Ceylan, 1999, p. 38; Korkmaz, 2014, p. 71).
  • In multi-author publications, the name of the first author (Kaplan et al., 1999), if the publication cited is not accessible (Rabbitt, 1982, as cited in Lyon et al., 2014), if an oral source is used, information as Name, Surname, Date and Place of Interview should be added.
  • For a work with 21 or more authors, include the first 19 authors’ names, insert an ellipsis (...), but no ampersand, and then write the final author’s name.
  • When citing web resources, author name or name of group or name of institution and date should be given.

In studies with three or more authors, “et al.” abbreviation should be used after the first author’s surname.

REFERENCES

References should be given in accordance with APA 7 (American Psychological Association 7th Edition) standards. Some examples of references are given below (Retrieved from APA Style Common Reference Examples Guide, APA Style 7th Edition). More rules and examples are available at the Reference examples (apa.org).

 

General Rules for References:

  • References should be given in alphabetical order.
  • Use the letter formats such as 2000a, 2000b for two or more sources of the same author in the same year and give them in alphabetical order.
  • When there are 21 or more authors, include the first 19 authors’ names, insert an ellipsis (but no ampersand), and then add the final author’s name.
  • There is no need to specify the 1st Edition of the books. For the second and subsequent editions, “2nd Ed.” abbreviation is used.
  • The abbreviation (Ed. and Eds.) is used instead of the editor(s).
  • Journal and book titles are written in italics without shortened.
  • Conference proceedings published in a journal or book follow the same format as for a journal article, edited book, or edited book chapter.
  • For unpublished dissertations and theses, the university name appears in the source element of the reference, whereas for published dissertations and theses, the university name appears in square brackets after the title. The type of the thesis also should be given after the title.
  • In electronic sources, in addition to basic information, access date and access address information are also given.
  • In electronic resources, the last update date is taken as the publication date.
  • Personal conversations such as letters, e-mails, phone calls do not need to be included in the references, the conversations are referenced in the text.
  • In Arabic articles, a reference list in Roman script should also be included. 
  • Use a hanging indent for all references, meaning that the first line of each reference is flush left and subsequent lines are indented by 0.5 in.

 

BOOK / E-BOOK

Do not include the publisher location in the reference.

Electronic books should be given in the reference like printed books. Unlike other books, Doi or access link should be added, if any.
