Abstract

Abstract

In order to understand the socio-cultural structure of a society, researching its past and present clarifies the aim of a sociological study. It is only possible to analyze correctly this process by understanding the intellectuals who play an active role in the change/ transformation of that society. This study was conducted in order to make a sociological evaluation based on Ziya Gökalp’s understanding of religion and nationalism, one of the most important scholars of Turkish nationalism in the late Ottoman period and the early Republic. Gökalp's thoughts and methods are still influential today and act as a guide for Turkish scientists and society. Gökalp's ideas, who has frequently made a name for himself in the history of Turkish thought, have not only been a source of knowledge for his own period, but also for the formation of the new Republic of Turkey. As a matter of fact, the words of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, "The father of my body is Ali Rıza Efendi, the father of my feelings Namık Kemal, the father of my ideas is Ziya Gökalp" confirms this idea. For this reason, the main purpose of this study is to examine the events which molded the key figure who pioneered the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. In addition, this study proves to be quite important in terms of understanding the social analysis in the process that started with the influence of French sociologists on his life and ideas. It is quite impossible for the personalities who pioneered history with their ideas not to be affected by contemporary circumstances. For this reason, it is difficult for Gökalp, who shaped the mentality of Turkish society with both nationalistic and religious ideas, not to be affected by the depressed situation of the Ottoman Empire. Studies carried out that do not consider the political climate of the period also hinder a clear understanding of history. This anachronistic approach possesses drawbacks in both analyzing the conditions of the period and understanding their effects on modern society. For this reason, the study aims to objectively investigate the historical and sociological analysis while taking into account the social atmosphere of that period.
