Abstract
This study analyses the period in which ez- Zerkeşi who signifcantly contributed to Muslim culture and civilizaton and who lived during the Memluks period lived as well as his life and works. Firstly, the period in which Zerkeşi lived will be analysed in terms of its politcal and social conditons, and scientfc and cultural cnditons based on background informaton. Then, his works will be introduced including the contents of them. Memluks state was very influental in that theologists of the period were educated on all barnches of Islamic felds (i.e, commentary, traditon, canon law, recitaton, mystcism), lexicology and history and in that the number of these theologists was very large. Many of the biographies, tabaqat and detailed encylopedia that are among valuable products of the Islamic culture were all writen during this period. However, it should be noted that ez-Zerkeşî has been neglected by the researchers dealin with the scientfc actvites and scholars of the period. We think that such an inorance is a result of incomplete analyses of the period. Because ez-Zerkeşî is a signifcant scholar who writen about all the felds mentoned above. He was an inspiraton for Suyut’s many works. His works on distnct disciplines are waitng for being read in several libraries such as Süleymaniye. The aim of this study is to reveal the fact that ez-Zerkeşi is a signifcant scholar for our scientfc and cultural history based on his works.
