Abstract

The purpose of this research is to study the social problems that 2nd and 3rd graders confront with their peers in the school with respect to variables such as age, sex, preschool education status and number of siblings, and also to investıgate how these 2nd and 3rd graders solve these problems. The sample of this mixed method research constitutes of 255 2nd and 3rd graders at a private school in Kadıköy, İstanbul in school year of 2019-2020. 129 of the participants are female and 126 are male. In order to gather quantitative data, “Social Problem Solving Survey” is prepared and used in consultation with experts. This survey includes 8 exemplery incidences. These incidences are disobeying the rules of a game, exclusion, verbal-physical violence, breaking a promise, unauthorized use of a belonging, assertion of dominance and not listening to each other. Answers to “If you have this problem, what would you do to solve it?” are sought and the participants are asked to choose only one of the options given. For qualitative data, observation and focus grıup discussion is used. In focus group discussions, exteme sampling model is used. Both observations and focus group discussions are written down and discussions are also recorded by a recording device. Quantitative data gathered through the survey is analyzed using SPSS software. For qualitative data, methods of content analysis and descriptive analysis is used. It’s found that male students are more likely to need a 3rd party to involve than females in order to solve these problems. Besides, while some of the participants expect their peers to kindly warn them, it’s observed that they tried to force their way into a solution themselves, in a case of a social problem. In light of these findings, students need to be supported in order to solve their social problems by themselves, they need to be able to manage their feelings, furthermore these abilities should be taught in classes such as Life Sciences and Social Studies.
