Child/Forced Marriage and its Socio-Cultural Roots

Abstract

The common emphasis of defnitons about forced/early marriage is there is no free and full consent of person about marriage arrangement and the partner. The traditon which causes so many human right violatons and abuse has been very strong especially in South Asian and Sub-Saharan African countries and some middle eastern and Latn American countries. The prevalence of early/forced marriage varies from %70’s in South Asian countries to %30’s in Southeast Asian countries. The cultural system based on these places has its own mechanism which produces this type of marriages in itself and the legal system has’nt usually been preventng this even it has certain gaps that encourages early/forced marriage. The thing underlies at the botom is the patriarchal politcal system and cultural attudes and religious perceptons atached with it. Early/forced marriage which accompanies with the gender and marriage paterns which the system produced is affected by educaton, economic difcultes, cultural and religious perceptons, approachments of sexuality and honor and war condittons. İn this artcle which focused especially on women because of their disadvantaged positons, it has been suggested that women has been desttute of individual independence, educaton and the partcipaton of decision making process, the rate of possibility of domestc violence is higher and they face of risk of health, abuse, misuse, insecurity and even death in consequence of early/forced marriages and tried to examine the structural elements which created this scene by looking through some present studies.
