Abstract

“The sociology of sin” tries to analyze the social contexts of the phenomenon of sin which is generally discussed in an individual perspectve. In this context, it is understood that there is an overlap between the psychological approach, which argues that sin arises as a result of the personal processes such as personality, subconscious, learning, and the sociological approach, which discusses that sin occurs under the social conditons. In that case, there is a common effect of psycho-social factors in the emergence of a sin. In this artcle, it is tried to make an essay of introducton to the Islamic sociology of sins in the context of the Prophet Muhammad’s attude toward sins and sinners; and afer a conceptual and theoretcal base, relevant opinions and practces of the Prophet Muhammad are discussed as a sampling frame. Last of all, the main argument of this paper is that the Prophet Muhammad’s attude toward sinful people and groups is open to a prety solid sociological interpretaton. Because he not only emphasized the individual’s moral development about the preventon of sins and the treatment of sinners, but also drew atenton to the importance of structural factors other than actor (sinner) himself such as family, social envronment and economy.
