Abstract

Afer the implementaton of social market economy, Turkish society has entered a compelety new period of tme since 1980s. As a result of this process while the society has been getng richer and more autonomous, public sphere has been open for common people in all structures of life. By this way different levels of society have become integrated with each other. The main objectve of this study is to investgate the percepton of religious groups which are called as orders in history and religious community in today’s world by secular circles. It’s emphasized here that the religious groups haven’t fully benefted from the bringings of the normalizaton period between religion and statesociety relatons. Essental data of the study is collected from the interviews conducted with the people who defne themselves as secular. The main reason for the selecton of the secular circle is that the secular ideology contnues its existence and functon as a social imaginary and with the help of governmental insttutons this ideology is perceived as the natural owner of the public sphere. On the other hand, the visibility of Islam/the Muslims in the public sphere is conceptualized by religious groups due to the fact that besides their social actvites, their existence has strong influence over the politcal agenda. From this perspectve we suggest that the thougts of secular circle about those new residents of the public sphere are higly important.
