Abstract

Leaving a testament or will is a culture in Islamic world. The religious’ advices are most important factor in that. Leaving testament/will is also a human behavior. Many scholars outstanding in Islamic world wrote testaments. Islamic philosophers have followed this traditon of writng or leaving testament as well. Not only religious factor but also philosophical heritage had an impact on Islamic philosophers’ writng testaments. Because, before them, in both Western and Islamic sources, there are testaments propounded to belong to Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, famous philosopher of Ancient Greek. We can estmate that Islamic Philosophers was affected from these testaments. Here, in this study, the testaments of some Islamic philosophers such as Ibn Miskawayh, Ibn Sina, Ghazâlî, Suhrawardî, Fakhr ad-Din ar-Râzî, Ibn Sab’în, Mawlâ- na, Sadreddin Konawî are evaluated. These testaments are analyzed and compared with one another in point of form and content, and are evaluated in the context of Islamic moral philosophy. Moreover, it is proposed that it is necessary to add these testaments to the sources of Islamic moral philosophy as short and concise texts.
