Abstract

The ageing of populaton is a process that not peculiar to developed countries, it also occurs in developing countries. The statstcal data signify that Turkey is making a transiton to a new demographic structure. As in 2012, the rate of 65 and above age is 7,5 % within the total populaton. The calculatons based on the assumpton that current demographic trends of Turkey would contnue indicate that especially in the second half of the 21 century will be a century of the elderly. While gradually rise in the elderly populaton improving the coexistence of different generatons, at the same tme the issue on intergeneratonal dialogue and solidarity come into prominence. The point of view of young on elderly and elderliness is able to provide important clues to the content and its course.This study aims to reveal the point of view on “elderly and elderliness” of young studying in Karadeniz Technical University and how this percepton/point of view reflect to the intergeneratonal solidarity and dialogue. The research method is based on descriptve research which describes the current situaton. In this context, a survey has been applied in order to present the general profle of students and their feelings, thoughts, positve and negatve point of views towards elderly and elderliness. Their opinions on how they defne elderly, which age group is seen as elderly, signs of elderliness, the positve and negatve characteristcs of elderliness, their relatons with elderly, communicaton frequency, communicaton styles, how they spend tmes with them- etc. were taken over by means of this survey questonnaire. In this context, survey was conducted with 381 students in KTU. Although the negatve results related to the point of view on elderly and elderliness taken from at the end of the research, it has been concluded that intergeneratonal dialogue and solidarity are stll strong and important and maintained as well.
