Abstract

Antakya (Antoch), the frst city which has embraced Islam in Anatolia, has been a Muslim place for a long tme. Main structure of social and cultural peculiarites of the city has been shaped predominantly by Islam itself. This is due mostly to the famous Islamic scholars who have deep religious and historical backgrounds, living in the city and around. Muslims have conquered Antakya for the frst tme and setled thereby during the period of Hz. Umar (d. 644). Later on, the city has become one of the main headquarters of the Islamic world, possessing several scholars who work in the felds such as hadith, fqh, Islamic mystcism, recitaton, medicine, mathematcs and so on. Therefore, many scholars who lived in Antakya were named as "al-Antâkî". Habib Najjar who is mentoned in Qoran as a true believer, is thought to live in Antakya, before the prophet Mohammed (SAV). The Islam commander Abu Ubeyde b. Jarrah (d. 638), Ahmed al-Kuseyri (d. 1549) Beyazit Bestami (d. 878), Dawood al-Antâkî (d. 1599) and Ali bin Muhammad Antâkî (d. 987) are among the famous fgures who have deeply affected the socio-cultural life of Antakya. Accordingly, searching and revealing the positon of Khidr (pbuh) in Islamic culture, who is also a legendary fgure in the social culture of Antakya and its region, and serving the true knowledge to people, is essental scientfcally. There are many tombs and graves which are supposedly believed to belong to him in both Sunni and Nusayri beliefs. In this study, the Khidr belief among the people who live in this area will be evaluated, in accordance with what is told in the Surat al-Kahf in the Qoran.
