Abstract

19th century is a tme period in which Muslims around the world faced big crises and predicaments. During this century, local mahdis appeared in many places throughout the Islamic world with a claim to relieve people of their worldly pains and troubles. Some of these people achieved considerable success locally and gathered around a band of followers. There is also an increase in the number of these messianic movements inside the boundaries of the Otoman State. Among the litle-known 19th-century Otoman mahdis was one Hafz Abdullah Efendi. Although he did not have a charismatc personality that would atract people, he claimed to be a mahdi but was arrested immediately before gaining even a small following. Hafz Abdullah Efendi was sent into exile thereafer for nearly 8 years and he was freed only afer the ofcials made sure that he renounced his claim
