Abstract

This artcle deals with the pre-Islamic period belief systems of Turks and the process of becoming Muslim as an important part of the historical background of religious life in Turkey. The main aim of the artcle is to point out some remarkable sociological motfs on the events that spring during this process and to describe the possible effects of this historical period on the prevailing Turkish religiosity. We can summarize the general results of the artcle as: (1) No mater how consistent and profound they are, the effects of pre-Islamic belief systems and the Islamizaton process of Turks on the prevailing religious life in Turkey are projectonal and general, not deterministc and linear. (2) Belief systems are unbending and stubborn and they resist against change; when change is unavoidable they show a tendency to exist by changing form. This tendency also has a syncretc and eclectc character. (3) The overall change of belief systems is a long-lastng and painful process. However, belief systems are more open to change when there is a social interacton ground on which there is cooperaton and a solidarity process based on equality.
