Abstract

Bindings are protective covers that prevent spreading of book leaves and hold together. Leather is generally used in the binding art. With the decorations on the covers, the binding starts to develop in the artistic sense over time and this makes the binding covers more valuable. The manuscript libraries were established in order to protect these covers and to transfer them to the next generations. The manuscript libraries have enabled these covers which are important in terms of art and history to be reached the present day. One of these libraries is the Yusuf Ağa Library which was built in Konya in 1796. In this study, two samples of bindings in Yusuf Ağa Library of 18th century were investigated. In the first of these samples, the technique of printing on leather and the technique of painting on the leather were used in the second one. The motifs used in the pattern printing technique are naturalistic. In the binding cover decorated with painting on leather, yeksah technique is applied. The 18th century is a period in which new decoration techniques and motifs enter binding art. While new techniques were used, the techniques and motifs applied in the classical period were not abandoned during this period. Two examples of the bindings examined in the study reflect the characteristics of 18th century binding art.
